The first thing most people want to do to customize their iPad is to change the background, lockscreen, or wallpaper.

Luckily, it isn’t hard!

The first thing you’ll need to do is find an image that is 1024×1024 (width x height). You can probably find a lot more images sized as 1024×768 (since that’s a traditional screen size), and then you can rotate it 90 degrees. I found many images that rotated well, but it will depend on what you want in your image. You can also find an image that is at least 1024 high, and then crop the sides using just about any image editing program.

Once you have your image, transfer it to your iPad by putting it in your Photos (using iTunes). You can also try mailing it to yourself and saving it to your camera roll.

Once the image is in your photos, you can select the image and make it your wallpaper. You can also set it using the Settings app, and choosing wallpaper, and then selecting the image. You can choose if you want it for your “lock screen” and/or you wallpaper. That’s it!

This came up on my iTunes shuffle this morning while working, and brought a nice little tear to my eye – so many memories :)   Buckaroo Banzai fans will recognize it as the song Buckaroo played on the piano during his concert.  The original is by the Skyliners, but I have suprisingly come to like the Motley Crue version better…

There’s a version on youtube at: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NJ84O6FhepI  It has some Final Fantasy video attached to it – I’m not a FF player, so it made no sense to me, but it is visually interesting none-the-less…

Last year, during one of my trips taking my grandfather to one of his appointments, the topic of music came up. (I know – I ended a sentence with a preposition, sue me…). He always appreciated classical music, while I like it, but only in spurts, depending on my general auditory-mood. I mostly just like Mozart, Chopin, and a few others, while his favorite was Chopin.

He mentioned that he clearly remembered the first album he ever bought, when he was 10 or 12 (This must have been mid-1930′s then I suppose). It was a performance of Poet and Peasant. His brother let him play it on his record player. He remembered playing it over and over, but having been so long since he listened to it, he couldn’t remember much of the score.

Later that evening I found a copy on iTunes and made him a CD that included Poet and Peasant, as well as several of his favorite Chopin pieces.  I listened to it several times and really enjoyed it – I even put it on my phone and nano for when I worked out.

So, a couple days later, on my next trip over, I suprised him with the CD and said it had Poet and Peasant on it. I put it in his CD player and pressed play. We both sat and listened to it.  I was quite proud of myself for bringing him this reminder of his early days, as well as enjoying it myself. After a few minutes he said “AH! I remember this song clearly now!  But, I don’t remember why I liked it so much…”

He enjoyed the Chopin more than the Poet and Peasant.  There’s a very nice version of P&P on YouTube here.

Over the past year, I’ve spent a LOT of time in waiting rooms.  Doctor offices, dentists, dermatologists, eye-doctors, and even a couple hours every week at the hair-dresser’s.  Of course, none of these appointments were for me – they were/are for my grandparents (and now just “Grandma”).  Since my grandfather first started getting sick last summer, my mother and I have acted as chauffeurs.  Not surprisingly, old people have a lot of appointments.
In fact, I’m writing this entry from the waiting room at my grandmother’s hair dresser’s building. My grandmother has been seeing the same stylist for 24 years – Every friday, rain or shine. She claims that she MUST go, not only to keep up appearances, but also for “morale” and sanity.  So I spend each Friday morning sitting in a waiting room for about 2.5 hours.

I really like my work and I’ll often subconsciously  feel “guilty” and/or “anxious” when I could be working, but I’m not. It’s not a concious thought of “oh man, I need to be working”, it’s that behind-the-scenes, not-quite-right feeling that I should be doing something productive.

I used to bring a pen and notebook and try to update todo lists, organize projects, and jot down thoughts. (Maybe that’s where my fascination with notebooks took it’s foothold… but I digress…) After a while, that got to be “old” and I still had the “unproductive” feeling. I usually had to copy the todo lists and notes to my online storage places (rememberthemilk.com, wiki, etc.), so I felt like I was duplicating my efforts.

Then, at the beginning of the year I borrowed a friends Dell 8″ netbook for some international travel. I knew I wasn’t going to be working much, but still wanted to check email. And I KNEW I didn’t want to lug around a 10 pound 17″ laptop around Scotland just to check email.  The 8″ netbook was okay for reading email, but the keyboard was just too tiny for my hands – I had to hunt-n-peck because the keys were too small.  Not to mention when I tried to do a little programming on the flight home, a lot of the programming characters ({,[,],},|,etc.) were all “function” keys or otherwise oddly placed.

After that, I figured I wouldn’t bother getting a netbook, since I couldn’t use it to program, and that’s one of the things I like to do on planes and hotel-room-down-time. But a few weeks later I was at Costco and saw the new Acer Aspire One 10″ model. I tried the keyborad and it was small, but big enough for touch typing. Plus, a quick search for linux “support” showed that it worked great with ubuntu, right out of the box.

I was originally going to dual-boot the netbook with XP and ubuntu, but after I messed up the disk partitioning during ubuntu install, I hosed XP. Now it’s a linux/ubuntu laptop only – and I’m glad. It’s great. I don’t miss XP at all, and ubuntu’s netbook remix has been rock solid.  The singular complaint/nuisance is that the volume just isn’t there like it was with XP. I’ve installed all kinds of tweaks for adjusting volume, but it just won’t go loud. O-well.

So now, while sitting in waiting rooms, I can work on my netbook. It’s small enough that I don’t have any issues carrying it. And with 3G, the internet is fast enough to be not annoying.  If you travel a lot, or even a little, and don’t want/need to carry a huge laptop around, I highly recommend getting one.

So, I was reading through a blog (linked through Ajaxian is how I found it), about how Apple, Steve Jobs, and the iPhone prefer to have the phone “closed” to small developers and home hackers. I’ve actually made a couple small apps for my Moto Q (using Visual C++), and downloaded a few free ones off the net. The result: I have had to reinstall due to one of the apps crashing the phone. So, if they want stability, that’s what they should do.

Luckily, I don’t see a down side to a closed iPhone, for one MAJOR reason – it’s a broadband phone with internet connectivity! You want an app for you phone? Do what I did and write a web page. So simple! Sheesh. I’ve got several apps that I host that I can get to using EVDO (cellular broadband on verizon) and because the Q supports JavaScript and has a legible screen, I can do pretty much anything I need to!

Now, I’m wondering if the iPhone will have Web 2.0/AJAX support, which would make it the shiznit. I won’t be the first in line to get one, but after a few months, and most of the reviews are out, I’ll seriously consider it.

Audio/Video and Movies/DVDs26 Feb 2006 08:23 am

So, after getting used to my iPod shuffle’s limitations, I finally bit the bullet and got an iPod Video 60G, so I can watch movies on long plane rides, and also keep most of my MP3 collection in one place.

I picked it up this Friday and put on the videos from iTunes – they worked fine.  Then, using ImTOO software, I (theoretically) encoded a couple of DVDs and some AVI files I had.  Guess what!?  After a minute or two, there would be a short pause, then the sound would go away. This happened on every single video file – boom – no sound…  I google it, and find out, the newest firmware (which my iPod came with) does this on nearly all non-iTunes videos!

WTF!

Seriously, i was about two seconds from returning the P.O.S.! I can’t watch my OWN FRICKIN’ DVDs!?!? I don’t know if it was a specific “feature” they added, or what, but if it wasn’t fixable, the pod was going straight back.

A little more searching, and I found that it didn’t do that with the 11-17-05 firmware, the videos worked fine. So, using the information at http://forums.ipodhacks.com/showthread.php?p=4254#post4254, I was able to do the downgrade, and the videos (exact same videos) work just fine.  It took a while to actually locate a windows version of the downgrade, but I eventually found the correct version.

The other really annoying thing that Apple does, is only allow you to sync to one machine. Extremely lame on their part, and it basically CRIPPLES the functionality. Well, Ron let me in on some GREAT software that fixes almost all the limiting factors of iTunes.  It’s Anapod Explorer by Red Chair Software.  If you use more than one machine (like home and work machines for example), you MUST pick up this software. Makes drag-and-drop to your iPod a reality.

(Note: this post is completely made up – I would never copy DVD’s or do anything illegal like that – I was just hypothetically speaking.)

Finally saw “Exorcism of Emily Rose” this weekend, and it was okay. Not terribly frightening, but worth a rental. My amazon purchase of “Drive” arrived yesterday, so I threw that in the PC while I did some financial stuff (compling ETF historical data to do some portfolio risk analysis and risk minimization functions). It’s weird – this movie ROCKS sooo hard, yet so few people know about it. If you like martial arts films, this is one of the best of the 90′s – second only to Fist of Legend. I’m also almost caught up with Battlestar Galactica. I’m two-thirds through the Season 2.0 disks and will finish sometime this week. The second seasons seems like it’s less “military/warfare” related and delves more into the personal interractions. It’s good so far, though sometimes not as exciting as the first season.

Cycling
More bike riding this weekend, with the CS200 in tow. I like it, but I’m still getting used to the online software vs. the software that came with my polar watch. It seems like it’s missing some of the cool features (graphing, etc). I need to play with it more. I also installed a Barbieri CarbOne carbon mini pump – that sucker is light! I also had more time with the TIME pedals/cleats. And I have to say I like them better than the SPD-SL’s I used to have. The clip in is much easier… Especially when stopping and starting with traffic around. The spd-sl’s weren’t hard, but these are down-right easy.

Family
I finished installing my grandparent’s DVD player. I also took over some Northern Exposure and Monk DVDs for them to watch. I told them to call if they had questions, but they haven’t called yet. I also orderd a book for my grandfather called “Royal Navy Escort Carriers” by David Hobbs. I think it has pictures of the carrier that he was on during WWII (The Premier). I could only find it in England – amazon didn’t have it and neither did amazon.co.uk!

All of us at CheatCodes got PSPs to play around with. I’ve been playing Burnout:Revenge mostly, and it’s a very good game (much like the Burnout games for the consoles). Jonah really likes it too, but he’s also a big fan of the Golf game that came with it (can’t think of the exact name off the top of my head). I plan on getting The Con in the next day or so, and will get Armored Core as soon as it comes out.

I highly recommend this show on Food Network. His entertaining and educational “nutritional anthropologist” segments, combined with the funny “W” segments and the occasional “Oh Bother”, make the show very entertaining. Put it on your Tivo’s Season Pass list! NOW!

The Soup on E! is one of the best shows ever. If you haven’t watched it recently, it is as good as ever and getting better every week. Watch it! Tivo it!

I just thought I’d write a little bit about the television shows I’ve been watching. Though I don’t watch a ton of TV, I usually have it on in the background when I’m working.

LOST: I borrowed a friends Season 1 DVD’s and started watching last week. Unfortunately, it’s kept me up way past my bedtime. I’m glad I didn’t watch this during the regular season – the non-stop cliff hangers each week would have driven me nuts. I’m just into the part where Hurley is trying to figure out what the numbers are, boone (sp?) is in another airplane crash, and Sawyer kills the wrong guy.

The Apprentice: Okay, the dude that got fired last week deserved it for one main reason. Trump flat out told him to bring in the guy that caused the loss. He said no, I want the idiot in here with me, and Trump AGAIN tells him ‘you SURE you don’t want the frickin’ idiot that caused the loss?” .. Nope… I would have just fired him right there. If you can’t get THAT big of a hint, you’re an 1d10t.

Medium: I enjoy the show, but if her husband goes on about how he doesn’t believe any of her dreams again, I’m going to puke. DUDE! Seriously! It’s the whole premise of the show, and you see it every week – she talks to dead people. If she says don’t get on a plane – DON’T! sheesh.

Desperate Housewives: This season is getting off to a very slow start. There’s no mystery yet. Sure, there are some small curiousities… but not the big mystery of the first season. Hopefully this will ramp up in the near future.

On a non-TV note, I’m installing Mac OS X on an old Mac here. Just trying out the Apple thing. Going okay so far… And on a final note, this morning I weighed 179.0.

I went on a great 42 mile ride this morning with my friend Chip (who has an excellent TREK Madone). Took just over 2 hours at a pretty good pace (Took most of the Rio Grande Bike Path). I may do a short 20 miler tomorrow. I burned through 2000 calories on that ride! And, we just missed a major accident on the trail (we saw the ambulances and big blood spots, but not the riders that got hurt).

This Video from Whose Line is it Anyway, is one of the funniest things ever shown on television. Here’s a happy couple checking the results of a pregnancy test. And, don’t forget about Tom Cruise Killing Oprah.
